Trout Lily, Erythronium americanum, is a delightful perennial woodland wildflower, frequently found in the high upper areas surrounding bogs. It often forms large spreading colonies. The flowers are small yellow, nodding and lily shaped. The common name refers to the appearance of its gray-green leaves mottled with brown or gray, which allegedly resemble the coloring of brook trout. It is Deer Resistant, and prefers growing in consistently wet, loose rich soils, appreciating shade. It flowers in the Spring and dies back by mid Summer.
